Just wanted to know if anyone else has been unlucky enough to have problems with their gearbox. Mine packed up (started slipping and jerking) last week and i have just been told it needs a complete overhaul which will cost me over

Mine is an X reg, done 36,000 miles, towed a lightweight caravan, and i have had no trouble with the auto gearbox. i have in the past had a 3.0i Granada auto, towing a heavy twin-axle caravan, it burnt out the auto box, and cost

I would definately get a second opinion from a specialist auto technician. I am having problems with my autobox (occasionally not changing until 5000 RPM) but I have done 140,000 miles. I was quoted

Last year we had a spate of auto box problems reported on the forum. There were a number of "contributors" and members who were surprised by these problems, as the Jatco unit is supposed to be very reliable according to those in the trade. You've been very unlucky to have failure at such a low mileage but outside warranty. Mind you, the price for overhaul looks excessive - it looks more like the price of a whole new box. Could be worth looking for one at a scrappies?

As Ivor says, I was one of the contributors.

My gearbox packed up with only 2500 miles and only 5 months old.

In the end, a new gearbox was installed under warranty.

Been ok since.

Like others, mine does like to hold on to a gear longer than it should at times but never 5000rpm - well not even 4000 rpm.

Good luck.

I have been reading on a VW forum about an autobox failure! the dealer suggested that one of the tip tronic paddle switches was playing up andthis may have lead to the early demise of the box! the dealers were going to replace the paddle switch and see if that cured the problem? if not they suggested changeing the gear box

I'll trawl through my web sites visited over the last few days and see if I can find the topic to see what the out come was

i presume thats main dealer price? when we had problems with ours the dealer sent us to a specialist, as in there words ( we dont do autos) they quoted for reconditioning existing box around

Galaxy TDI Auto. I have just started getting engine slip on my car. It has done 100,000 and is only just 4 years old. Fully serviced and as luck would have it under warranty. When I bought the car last year from a well know leasing co, it developed a thump at it changed into 3rd gear. It was been repaired (or so they say, as it did't entirley disapear), Now a slight thump is still present from time to time. So the slip would appear to be a problem know to some of us. I am interested in the reply of the wiring harness, is this causing a problem for the electronic control unit ? Could there be another cause? or should I suspect that the repair last year was poor quality leaving me with a gearbox ready die!

I also have a gearbox jumping, started bout a fortnite ago. Seems to miss first gear n wen it finds it, it jumps with a clunk. So from reading all the posts I take it could be any of the problems. The person I purchased it from said he had a gearbox refurb or was he telling me porkies?

My Galaxy is with the garage who say my gear thumping problem is a broken piston. I presume this is related to the solinod selector for the 3rd gear and is actuated by oil pressure? Maybe this could be a problem on your first gear?

Any clunking into gear is a broken or worn component in the oil pressure circuit and not related to the electronic control system. I have an understanding of the old Borge Warner autoboxes which were purely mechanical. The Jetco boxes have a simular basic design. Any info anyone has on the technical working of the jetco box would be welcome!.

Sorry to say it appears your problem on first gear could be an expensive fault the fix!

I have the same thumping into 3rd gear. This only happens when the car is cold AND when accelerating a little harder than normal (both together). Having said that it is easy to reproduce when cold. Problem is, that by the time I get to a ford dealer the car has warmed up and changes are fine. They've looked at it a few times and tell me nothing is wrong, but I've also been told that certain mechanical problems willnot show up on the diagnostics?

Other folk who are having this trouble.

1. Has anyone managed to get it resolved?

2. Does it only happen when cold, or on every 2nd --> 3rd change?

 MY car is back from th garage. Third gear thumping has disappeared, however a long run will prove if the replaced broken piston has cured the problem.

i would take it to a specialist (or 3) and get a few opinions on the box of black magic, to see what they can do and for how much etc

Unfortunately I'm in Ireland and auto boxes are not very common here. I have spoken to a few guys, but they are not telling me a lot other than it will probably cost in the region of

I know this sounds obvious but have you checked the oil level in the gearbox.

It would be the first thing I would do seeing as it is free and easy to do.

My jumpy gearbox issues were only when it was cold and only when the oil level dropped to a certain level (it had a small leak I could never locate) once topped back up to the correct level it ran fine.

Maybe worth checking even if it is to cross of possible things that may be wrong.

Hello to all

The Jatco 5 is the 5 speed tip tronic box in the Galaxy from 2001

The common failier is loss of reverse and 3rd,4th and 5th.

The first simptom is a thud into 3rd

The cure is to replace the reverse/high gear piston as they crack.

This is a design fault in that the bottom of the piston is reccesed, allowing a crack to start at low miles.

The modified piston is thicker in the base to stop the problem.

Piston is around

I had this problem at 60000 miles approx on my 2000 2.3 auto. Turns out the problem was loss of fluid due to pin holes in the autobox sump which were hard to spot. This is caused by the sound deadening pad on the undertray. The pad splits and allows the foam rubber to hold water against the sump causing rust to form pin holes. About
